Bank Handlowy w Warszawie SA was established in 1870. It is the oldest continuously operating commercial bank in Poland. It has survived two world wars without seizing its operations and has become the main Polish correspondent bank for foreign banks. The large scale of its operations, enabled the bank to build up an impressive network of correspondent banks, open a branch in London, a foreign representative offices in New York, Moscow, Belgrade, Rome, Berlin and Kiev, as well as affiliations in Vienna, Luxembourg and Frankfurt.
In 1989 Bank Handlowy lost its monopoly in clearing with foreign countries but it obtained a greater freedom of operation within the full spectrum of banking services.In 1997 Handlowy came back to the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In 2000, Management Boards of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie SA and Citibank (Poland) S.A. signed an agreement to merger that took effect on the 1st of March 2001.
