The beginnings of Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN Spółka Akcyjna, which was established in 1999 as a result of a merger of Petrochemia Płock S.A. with Centrala Produktów Naftowych S.A., go back to year 1945 when an establishment of Centrala Produktów Naftowych took place and to 1961 when Mazowieckie Zakłady Rafineryjne i Petrochemiczne in Płock, the predecessor of Petrochemia Płock S.A was established. In 1999 for the first time, shares of PKN ORLEN were quoted at the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In year 2000 for the second time, shares of PKN ORLEN were offered to the public at the Warsaw and London Stock Exchanges.
The Concern, together with ORLEN Capital Group covering 203 commercial corporations, is one of the largest crude-oil corporations in Central Europe. It is also the largest manufacturer and distributor of fuels dominating the Polish wholesale and retail markets. The integrated refinery and petrochemical complex in Płock is the biggest one in Poland and is considered to be one of the ten most modern and efficient facilities of this kind in Europe. ORLEN owns or controls through franchising contracts the largest network of fuel stations in Poland, which included nearly 2,000 fuel stations with ORLEN, CPN and Petrochemia Płock S.A. logos.
There are two main segments within the basic activities: refining and chemical.

The Refinery Segment consists of crude oil processing into a range of products such as unleaded gasoline, diesel oil, furnace oil, aviation fuel, plastics and petrochemicals, and whole and retail sales of refinery products comprising mainly of gasoline.
- The Chemical Segment comprises production and sales of petrochemicals, fertilisers and PVC.
